For Prospective Members

Eligibility & Application

Students with at least a 3.5 weighted GPA, based on their transcript at the end of first semester junior year, are initially eligible.

In mid-to-late February, all academically eligible juniors receive an emailed invitation to apply, sent to their NHCS email account. If you believe you meet the GPA requirement but haven't received an invitation by the end of February, contact your counselor right away, as the process moves quickly.

The invitation includes instructions for completing the application, which gives students the chance to showcase their service, leadership, character, and extracurricular involvement. Applicants have at least two weeks to complete and submit their application, and should contact an NHS adviser with any questions.

There is no fee to apply to NHS. If you receive an email requesting payment to apply, it is not from Laney NHS.

Applications must be submitted by the stated deadline; late submissions cannot be considered.

In September of senior year, a second opportunity to apply is offered to academically eligible students who (1) did not apply as juniors, (2) were not accepted as juniors, or (3) were not yet eligible as juniors but now hold a 3.5 weighted GPA. The process is the same, though it moves somewhat faster.
